About 50km north of Kisumu, besides being the provincial headquarters of Kenya's Western Province, Kakamega's only real claim to fame is its proximity to the equatorial Kakamega Forest.
Kakamega is a good place to stock up if you are heading for the forest. It also has a post office, banks and market. The town's population is about 74,000, most of whom are farmers and fishermen of the Luhya tribe.
