A pretty town on the banks of the Kilifi Creek, Kilifi is home to an arty-yacht-club community who have snatched up the land alongside the lovely creek and gather in the evenings at the Seahorse Hotel to drink and tell their stories. For many years the only means of crossing the creek was by ferry, but a bridge was recently built, making crossing less adventurous but more practical.
The beach at Kilifi, Bofa Beach, is considered one of the best in Kenya, which is saying a lot. It is worth breaking your journey here for the beach or to look at the Mnarani Ruins, which include mosques and tombs dating from the 14th to the 17th century.
