A small agricultural town, Kitale is a base for people heading to Mt Elgon, Saiwa Swamp National Park and up to Turkana. The town dates back to the 1920s and '30s when the fertile land surrounding the town was heavily settled. Before that to the 19th century when the settlement of Quitale was a slave-trading centre. As a result, one can still see the trees in the area to which slaves where shackled when conveys stopped on their journey to the Indian Ocean.

Kitale has a post office, banks and busy market, as well as a little museum that feautures a gallery iliustrating human evolution, with specific reference to discoveries in East Africa.
