Eight kilometres from Taveta on the slopes of Kilimanjaro is Lake Chala. The water is impossibly clear, and framed by steep crater walls. Unfortunately, although the lake used to be popular for swimming, this is no longer recommended since a fatal crocodile attack in March 2002 claimed the life of an English woman.
