The main centre for tourists on Lake Turkana's eastern shore, the small town of Loiyangalani has an airstrip, post office, fishing station, two campsites and a luxury lodge, surrounded by the traditional homes of the Turkana people. (It is best to ask before taking photographs and expect to pay a fee for the privilege).
Loiyangalani was founded in the 1960's at a freshwater spring and is the home of the Elmolo people. There are only dirt roads up here - and these are heavily rutted and are only passable with a 4x4. Petrol is rare, as is mechanical help, so you need to be entirely self-sufficient. Also make enquiries about bandit activities before heading out from [Maralal].
