The most noticeable feature of the small village of Makindu is the flashy Sikh temple, which is sometimes lit up with fairy lights and has a magical appearance. This slice of India offers curries, dhahl, and chapatis in the dining hall if for some reason the craving hits while you're in Kenya. There are also rooms available which are clean, simply furnished, and equipped with en suite bathrooms. Payment for meals and accomodation, in keeping with the spiritually of the place, is by donation
Thirteen kilometres down the road is the Makindu Handicrafts Co-operative, where you can watch and photograph carvers at work. This is real tourist fodder and may not do if you are looking for a really personal souvenir.
