The small hillside town of Maralal is surrounded by the Maralal Game Sanctuary and is the main centre for the Samburu people, to whom the area holds great significance. The colonials who were eyeing out the grassy plains for their own gain, were stopped in their tracks by the colonial authorities who feared the Samburu would react with explosive violence. But today that tension is a thing of the past and the town has a lively atmosphere.
Maralal is a popular stop for safaris heading up to Lake Turkana, but most people come here to get up-close-and-personal with the ships of the desert - the main attraction is the camel safaris. Twenty kilometres north of the entrance to the Maralal Lodge, take a left turn through the village of Poror.
About 6km along this track, you come to the knife-edge Losiolo Escarpment, also known as 'World's End'. Here the Rift Valley wall plunges more than 2000m sheer down into the Suguta Valley - the longest sheer drop in the Rift Valley.
