Marsabit is the last outpost of civilisation in the vast desert of northern Kenya. It boasts three petrol stations, an airport, bank, post office, shops, restaurants, lodges and even a dry cleaner. The town is situated on an isolated million year old extinct volcano which rises almost a kilometre above the sea of desert and is surrounded by the 2,090 km2 Marsabit National Park and Reserve.
The hills here are heavily forested unlike the desert beyond. From the summit the views are fantastic, and the whole area is dotted with extinct volcanoes and craters.
The people of Marsabit are a colourful ethnic mix of Rendille, Boran and Gabra. The road between Marsabit and Isiolo is rough (you will need a 4x4) and has been plagued by bandits in the past. It is best to enquire at the police station before heading off on this road. You will probably need to be a party of at least two vehicles and be totally self-sufficient with water, food and petrol.
