Let's be up-front about this: the Masai Mara is one of the world's greatest wildlife destinations and not much beats the thrills of the Great Wildebeest Migration when the herds arrive around September, staying until December.
Naturally, the Masai Mara is an extremely popular travel destination, especially during the migration, and there are a number of factors to consider when choosing your Masai Mara accommodation, not least which region to visit and when to do so we've listed our ultimate favourites below but you can click on the 'read more' button for our recommendations by region.
Many travellers choose to be situated in the heart of the reserve - and there is plenty of Masai Mara accommodation there. Popular and somewhat commercial, these lodges cater for large numbers of people on a Masai Mara safari holiday and the plain fact is that you are going to see a number of other vehicles on game drives.
Don't let that put you off however - these central Masai Mara accommodation choices are here for a reason: they are slap-bang at the epicentre of the Masai Mara's best game viewing region and are smaller and more intimate than you might think.
We'd recommend the stylish Naibor Luxury Camp, the perfectly located Rekero Camp or the traditional charms of Sala's Camp.
For those seeking more solitude and privacy, a stay at one of the lodges just north of the reserve's northern boundary in a private concession is certainly more exclusive but it should be noted that there are smaller concentrations of wildlife.
We'd recommend the stunning location of Olonana, the exclusivity of Kichwa Tembo Bateleur Camp or the colonial comforts of the Elephant Pepper Camp.
The outlying lodges along the eastern boundary provide fairly large-scale Masai Mara accommodation and are the lodges closest to Nairobi. These lodges are generally used by those travelling on an overland adventure or a mobile safari - a perfect location for tired and dusty travellers arriving by road, but expect relatively high numbers of people.
We'd recommend the family-friendly Siana Springs Intrepids Lodge or the peaceful seclusion of Leleshwa Tented Camp.
