The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the most valuable on earth - it supports the most diverse migration of grazing animals on the planet.
Although the Masai Mara itself is only a quarter of the total area the animals traverse, as a source of food for migrating wildlife at a critical point in the dry season it is crucial to the survival of the whole ecosystem.
Due to pressure from growing local human populations, the expansion of wheat farming and increasing tourism facilities, wildlife numbers both inside and outside the Masai Mara National Reserve have dropped more than 70% since the mid-1970s.
Fortunately, an initiative was begun in 1999 to research changes in the wildlife environment. This has resulted in a large body of data being collated that will form a foundation for future conservation decisions.
