Essentially there are three ways in which to get in and around the Masai Mara. Either you will enjoy a private trip with a guide; be part of a scheduled trip in which you share your safari and guide with a group of travellers (in both cases your guide will pick you up from the airport and take care of you for the duration of your stay); or you can choose to fly into each destination, and then enjoy each lodge's safari services.

Unless you have a comfortable and elastic budget - in which case you can fly into the Masai Mara - you will be arriving by road from Nairobi (roughly a six-hour drive).

In Kenya, modified minibuses tend to be the mode of transport (both on public roads and on game drives).

All the lodges we recommend within the Masai Mara have their own 4WD vehicles (in East Africa you'll find that it's mostly closed-topped 4WD vehicles that are used).

If you're on a scheduled tour in East Africa then your game drives will take place in modified game-viewing minibuses even if each lodge you stay at may have other vehicles. If this is of concern to you, be sure to check with your safari operator what game-viewing vehicles you'll be getting around in.
