The Masai Mara area, given the factors of drought, fire and the constant crush of large herbivores, is dominated by resilient grass species. The rich grassland is also dappled by dark riverine forest and rocky quartz outcrops.

Grazing herbivores inhabit the grasslands while browsers prefer the woodland areas - usually acacia thickets dotted all over the grasslands or more water-dependant stands of African greenheart, African olive and various fig trees that attract fruit-eating birds and monkeys.

The arrival of the rains sees the rapid growth of the various grass species, which is of course what the vast herds of migrating wildebeest and zebra depend on.
