Meru

Named after the Bantu speaking people who live in the area, Meru is a busy administrative centre which services this part of the Eastern Province. High on the mountain and surrounded by lush cultivated fields and forest, Meru is often smothered in cloud, but if it is clear there are spectacular views of the plains below. This is the starting point for Meru National Park, but other than that there is not much reason to hang around here.

The Meru region is said to grow the best miraa (a small plant which is chewed, that acts as a mild stimulant with addictive properties) and the Meru market is the best place to acquire this.
