Mfangano island lies in the eastern reaches of Lake Victoria. It's home to the Suba people, who are fishermen and subsistence farmers, and its Mount Kwitutu rises to a peak of 1694m.

The island also has some ancient rock art, which is thought to have been created by the early Twa people who also inhabited Rwanda.
