See the spectacular Rift Valley, with the wide-open plains of East Africa stretching out before you. On this stunning safari you take in some of the very best of Kenya's Big 5 game viewing, its national parks and outstanding tribal people and scenery.
Included Highlights: Nairobi, Mount Kenya, Samburu National Park with 2 included game drives, Thompsons Falls, Lake Nakuru NP with 1 included game drive, and Masai Mara NP with 3 included game drives.
- Day 1: Nairobi to Mount Kenya
- Itinerary
Most people choose to arrive in Nairobi a few days before the official start day to experience the city. After your pre-departure meeting you head out of the city, and travel North to your campsite at the foot of Mt Kenya (5199m), the 2nd highest mountain in Africa. You have the afternoon free to enjoy an optional walk in the forest around the base of Mt Kenya, known for its prolific bird life and black and white Colobus monkeys.
- Days 2 - 3: Samburu National Reserve
- Itinerary
Samburu National Reserve is situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in Kenya. The plentiful water supply, trees and shade attract wildlife such as elephant, lion, giraffe and zebra from the surrounding savannah plains; leopards are also regularly spotted. The Uaso Nyiro River is renowned for its enormous crocodiles, which exceed 6m (20 feet) from snout to tail. You will have the opportunity to spot these animals on the game drive en route to your campsite.
On Day 3 you will depart on a morning game drive and return to camp for lunch. In the afternoon, once the temperature cools off, you head out for an afternoon game drive, returning in time to prepare dinner.
- Day 4: Thompson's Falls
- Itinerary
You will travel to Thompson's Falls and arrive at approximately lunch time. You have the afternoon free to explore the waterfalls which, at a height of 75m, are particularly spectacular during the rainy season.
- Day 5: Lake Nakuru
- Itinerary
You depart for your campsite, on the Kenana Farm. Visit the Kenana Knitters, a local community development project, or the local school. You visit Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its 2 million, or so, flamingos, which feed seasonally on the abundant algae. The park is also well known for its leopard and, as it is a rhino sanctuary, sightings of black and white rhino, as well as lion and buffalo. You partake in an included game drive into the park.
- Days 6 - 7: Masai Mara National Reserve
- Itinerary
The renowned Masai Mara Game Reserve is known for its density of animals, including the Big 5 and 453 species of birds. This national reserve's plains are predominantly open savannah, interspersed with patches of acacia woodland, and riparian forest along the Mara River.
Whilst game viewing is excellent in the Mara all year round, the most popular time to visit is in late July-August, when over 1 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra migrate from the Serengeti. The dramatic river crossings are a gruesome spectacle of the survival of the fittest.
You will set up camp here for 2 nights and enjoy early starts for your game drives, returning to camp for a late breakfast or brunch. There is time to reflect and relax during the hottest part of the day, before you head out on another game drive in the afternoon. You enjoy your last dinner and evening around the campfire, accompanied by the sounds of the open bush.
