Previously called the Northern Frontier District, this province covers most of northeastern Kenya. The communities that inhabit the region fall into two distinct groups: Pastoralist communities tending to their livestock, and Somalian refugees (the region shares a border with Somalia) who survive in the many large camps strewn across the area.

The dominant ethnic group of the province is the Somali people.
