Nyanza Province is one of Kenya's seven provinces (excluding the Nairobi area). The province is inhabited predominantly by the Luo people - the third largest ethnic group in Kenya.

Nyanza province was named by the Sukuma tribe who live on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Victoria. For the Sukuma, the word 'Nyanza' means a large mass of water.
