Family Holiday - there are plenty of fun family activities like waterskiing and mountain biking.
Fantastic Fishing - trawl for enormous Nile perch in the shallow waters of Lake Victoria.
Beautiful Birds - visit Bird Islands, or simply enjoy the incredible birdlife in the lodge gardens.
Rusinga Island Lodge, on the shores of Lake Victoria, is a peaceful and beautiful place to spend some time out during an East African safari. You can't help but relax at this lodge with its huge grounds, exotic trees and myriad of bird species - from mighty fish eagles to brightly coloured sunbirds.
The birdlife in the area is truly remarkable. The gardens alone are home to more than 369 species of local and migratory birds, while nearby Bird Islands are a very important breeding site for water birds. Ruma National Park is also worth a visit. You can arrange a bush breakfast in this remote reserve, home to Kenya's last surviving group of Roan Antelope.
Life at Rusinga revolves around the calm waters of the lake. Keen fishermen can cast for Tilapia off the lodge jetty, or make use of one of the well equipped fishing boats. Kids can spend their afternoons water waterskiing, knee-boarding and tubing.
Other energetic activities include mountain biking, and there is a choice of walks available. On the other end of the scale you could try one of the luxurious spa treatments, but be warned, there is a strong chance of drifting off to sleep on the massage table, wrapped in the soothing scents of aromatherapy oils.
LocationRusinga is on an island in Lake Victoria, the world's second largest freshwater lake, in western Kenya.

DiningRusinga Island Lodge is renowned for delicious home-grown food. The speciality dish is fish, served in a variety of tasty ways - grilled over the coals or Zanzibar-style with coconut, lime and coriander. All breads, pastries and cakes are homemade, and the lodge has its own organic vegetable garden.
Breakfast and lunch is served al fresco, in the shade of fig trees, overlooking Lake Victoria. In the evening you can sit down to dinner either in the dining room, by candlelight on the jetty or next to the floodlit swimming pool.
Accommodation at Rusinga Island Lodge is in seven twin or double cottages, and one family cottage. The cottages are made from stone and wood, and have high thatched roofs. Interiors are decorated with elegant fabrics, and each cottage has a spacious veranda overlooking the lake.
The family cottage has both a twin and double room, with interconnecting door.
