Once the headquarters of the Imperial British East Africa Company, Shimoni is 76 kilometres south of Likoma and the launching point for Wasini Island.
While here, you could explore the Shimoni Caves, which were once used to hold slaves before shipment. The path winds into the jungle from a point near the jetty and you enter the coral caves via a ladder through a rough hole in the ground. The caves are thought to go back 20km. There is also an interesting market here, built over an old British colonial outpost.
