The coast south of Mombasa stretching down to Tanzania is a tropical paradise, with endless stretches of wide sandy beaches lined with coconut palms and lapped by the warm tongue of the Indian Ocean. This is a Mecca for sun worshippers and snorkellers alike as the reefs are alive with colourful fish.

Tiwi beach is very popular with budget travellers, mainly because of the old hippy hangout, Twiga Lodge, which offers great budget accommodation. It's easy to arrange snorkel gear here to explore the reef.

Tiwi is 17km south of the Likoni Ferry and it is easy to get a southbound matatu (taxi-bus) to the junction, but don't attempt the two kilometre walk from the junction to the beach, as this is a mugger's paradise. Rather wait for a lift or a taxi.
