Overview of Lango Camp

Set amid pristine equatorial rainforest at the heart of the Congo Republic’s Odzala National Park, Lango Camp offers a rare opportunity to seek out Africa’s most seldom-seen forest animals. Ideal for nature lovers, this pioneering camp balances comfort and elegance with minimal environmental impact in the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest.

From its elevated position, Lango Camp looks over an open, marshy ‘bai’, attracting forest buffalo and if you’re quiet, sometimes elephant and other unique antelope. With galleried rainforests and sunny, green savannahs to discover, much of the exploring is done on foot but there are permanent rivers, to explore by boat or even kayak for the more adventurous. Its your choice to take a slow, gentle forest encounter or embark on a very active, adventurous experience. The experienced guides will tailor each day depending on your interests and fitness levels.

Conceived to be as low-impact as possible, Lango’s design was influenced by the traditional architecture of the local B’Aka tribe. For the complete rainforest experience, combine Lango Camp with its sister lodge – Ngaga Camp – located in primary rainforest on the park’s borders. This is primate country: various types of still shy monkeys may be spotted. Together, Lango and Ngaga make up a gentle adventure itinerary from Odzala Wilderness Camps.

General Facilities

Tucked into the branches of grand hardwood trees and overlooking a productive ‘bai’ where forest buffalo wallow during the day, Lango Camp is raised off the ground to allow visitors to soak up the views in between meals and activities, or off your private deck during siesta time.

Winding through the forest, elevated wooden walkways connect the camp’s six chalets with the main lodge, where a bar and lounge make welcoming places to relax after a day’s exploring. On clear nights, the outside deck promises a show of stars; the fire pit a place for tall drinks and even taller stories.

Carefully designed to impact as lightly on the environment as possible, Lango’s electricity is provided by solar energy (with a back-up generator if required), which means that video and camera batteries as well as laptops can be charged at camp. There is also a laundry service.

Dining

Days start with coffee before dawn to exploring the rainforest in the cool of the morning. After returning from a gentle walk or adventurous excursion, communal brunch is served in the dining room before you take advantage of some free time to catch up on your journal or have a nap.

Drinks are enjoyed around the fire pit before dinner is announced. The cuisine is surprisingly inspired given there aren’t many local ingredients and the plane arrives with a random delivery of imported goods once week. A three course set menu is served in the rustic, thatch and bamboo dining lapa around a long, jovial table.

The remoteness and forest life at Lango camp vividly intices the imagination. Unlike any other safari, we recommend a trip to the Congo for seasoned travellers looking for something different and very special; picture forest elephants, butterflies, parrots & carpets of flowers. Combined with its sister camp Ngaga you have the opportunity to encounter 9 different primate species, including the unique lowland forest gorillas.
