Carlien Parsons - Commercial Optimisation Manager
I was born and raised in the Cape Winelands, about 2-hours from Cape Town in a small Boland town called Ceres. I’ve lived most my life in Cape Town and Stellenbosch, but spent eight months in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve working at a lodge which I loved! I’m a slow-living, city-loving girl passionate about great food and wine and exploring the great city I live in.
I’m always on the lookout for new local food markets to hang out at. I’m a big fan of travelling locally and getting to know amazing South Africa! I think travelling to Africa should be on everyone’s bucket list. It has something for everyone, from thrilling adventures to the most luxurious and romantic retreats on earth. I feel so blessed being able to explore Africa and all its magic.
Where have I travelled
Extensively throughout South Africa: the West Coast and Winelands, the Garden Route and the Eastern Cape, the Kalahari, the Kruger Park, Madikwe Game Reserve and KwaZulu Natal. In Africa I've visited Botswana, Victoria Falls, Namibia, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam as well as Morocco. Internationally, I've travelled to the UK, Italty, Spain, Tenerife and Madiera.
My favourite travel moment
Flying into the Okavango Delta – being in total awe of the vast open plains beneath me. Botswana is truly one of the true untouched wilderness areas of Africa. Another brilliant moment is sipping freshly made local Dawa cocktails on Mnemba Island, a private retreat off Zanzibar’s coast. Mnemba Island is definitely the ultimate in barefoot luxury.
What I love about Africa
I love Africa for its vast open plains, breathtaking landscapes and the fact that it’s mostly rugged and untouched. On a safari in Africa one can truly escape the mundane and find out what life’s all about.
Some African travel advice
Get out and experience the local culture – don’t just take a tour to see what the locals do, get out and explore. It’s one of travel’s great rewards to fully understand the local culture and experience a destination authentically – not just from the seat of a bus!
Where I'd love to go next
I'm already planning a road trip through Namibia! Would love to go island hopping in Seychelles, to do a walking safari in Zambia, the Mana Pools Canoe Trail in Zimbabwe and visit Mozambique's north coast. Globally, I'd love to visit New York, Puglia in Italy, do an all-American road trip and go island hopping in Croatia.
