Lesotho is a small, landlocked country surrounded entirely by South Africa. The dramatic mountain nation of the Basotho people has an inimitable rural African atmosphere that is both proud and warmly welcoming. Ringed by mountains, Lesotho's rugged landscape is one of the most beautiful and austere on the African continent.
The entire country is more than a thousand metres above sea level; it is fittingly known as the Kingdom of the Sky. Out on the highlands, the sky is mind-bogglingly enormous, and the air crisp and pure.
Hiking and pony-trekking are the two best ways to see the country's lovely scenery (which is almost entirely free of fences) and experience the friendliness of its inhabitants.
Most of the Basotho people still live traditional, simple lives in the foothills of their mountainous land. A journey and visit through Lesotho allows you to observe an African country that remains natural and uncontrived by tourism.
You won't find quite the range of luxury accommodation here that you will find in neighbouring South Africa, but there are some excellent private lodges and guesthouses.
Most of the tours of Lesotho incorporate South Africa, like the South African Explorer, which is a 20 day camping trip that takes in the highlights of both countries.
