Lesotho's ecology is exceptionally undisturbed by human development, resulting in an exciting alpine flora that is pristine and diverse.
Lesotho's national flower is the spiral aloe (aloe polyphylla), a curious flower whose petals occur in both clockwise and anticlockwise spirals. The slopes of the Maluti Mountains are the best place to see this flower.
While peach blossoms and many other species flourish in the lowlands, Lesotho's highlands support a huge assembly of Cape alpine flowers. Curiously enough, many European garden species of flower are derived from Lesotho's alpine specimens.
