The tiny and rugged mountain kingdom of Lesotho is completely landlocked and entirely surrounded by its far more famous and well-visited neighbour, South Africa.

Its entire surface area (30, 355km2) is more than 1000m about sea level with over 80% of it higher than 1800m above sea level - making winters crisp and cold.

Lesotho has only a few towns and cities, with its capital Maseru by far the biggest.

Most of the countryside is dotted with tiny villages, an indicator of the traditional lifestyle of most of the Basotho people.

Fast Fact: Lesotho is famous for its fossils; the southern part of Lesotho near Moyeni being one of the best places in southern Africa to to see prehistoric footprints
