Lesotho's summers are hot and rainy, with almost all of the country's rainfall occurring between October and April. Summer generally brings sunny skies, but the weather in Lesotho is notoriously changeable: sudden thunderstorms, and thick, all-pervasive mists are common between November and March.
The months of January and February are particularly hot, though weather conditions are very altitude-dependent. Summer temperatures exceed 30°C in the lowlands but are much cooler in the mountains, sometimes even dropping below freezing.
Lesotho's winters, characterised by stark, clear skies, are bitterly cold, particularly in the highlands, with snowfalls between May and September (though in the mountains snow can fall year-round). Winter temperatures reach -7°C in the lowlands and -18°C in the highlands.
Weather conditions in Lesotho often change rapidly and unexpectedly; a clear sunny day can quickly become misty, rainy, and very cold. Take clothing for all seasons, from T-shirts to polar fleeces, and expect the unexpected.
