Tucked away in a remote rural area of south-western Lesotho is the comfortable, family-run Malealea Lodge and Pony Trekking Centre, an ideal place from which to explore this remote country.

The lodge specialises in pony trekking and can arrange treks from 1hr up to 6 days, tailor-made to suit your experience and requirements.

On trek you'll explore the real Africa; trails traverse spectacular mountain passes and some of Lesotho's highest waterfalls. You can see San (Bushman) rock paintings and experience Basotho culture by interacting with local tribes.

There are many activities on offer in the nearby area to help you to explore this diverse country, such as river rafting and abseiling; you could even make an appointment with the local Sangoma, or witch-doctor.

Malealea Lodge is located in a remote rural area near the village of Malealea in the south-western corner of Lesotho.

• Gardens

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at the lodge and there's also the alternative of self-catering in one of the 3 communal kitchens.

In the evenings you can be entertained around the campfire by various Basotho children's choirs or a local Basotho band, using their local home-made instruments.

Accommodation at Malealea Lodge comprises 22 en-suite rondavels (round cottages) as well as 5 Basotho huts & rooms (with 5 communal bathrooms). Linen and towels are provided.

For backpacking travellers, there are 9 Forest huts (2 beds per room) with 4 communal bathrooms and camping is also available.

Electricity is supplied by a generator, which is turned off late at night, so it's recommended that you bring a torch. Bring your own towels and sleeping bag.
