Every year the month of May marks the beginning of a
3 400km, week-long Rovos Rail Pretoria to Swakopmund Rail Journey.

Ride the rails from the golden savannah fields of South Africa's Highveld, through the sparse deserts of Namibia to arrive at the shores of the icy Atlantic, where ghostly shipwrecks litter the coastline.

Diamonds, Big Holes & Canyons

Departing from Pretoria's Capital Park Station, luxury train travellers set off at a smooth and stylish pace, and first stop is diamond country - Kimberley, South Africa.

In Kimberley a massive hole (the world's biggest man-made excavation) marks the memory of the world's most famous diamond rushes.

A visit to the mine museum village indulges guests in the classic atmosphere of the good old 1870s. Back on the train, it's off to Upington, rolling over the stark and arid Northern Cape - a promise of the vast desert to come.

Into the Land of Sand

Traversing the Namibian border, an off-train excursion to the Fish River Canyon awaits. This magnificent rift of rock and soil is second in size to the mighty Grand Canyon.

The Namibia train journey continues through the untamed and unmatched beauty of the Kalahari. The land of sand and solitude has stirred the spirits of many a traveller.

In Namibia's capital city, Windhoek, you can explore the German town on a short city tour. Next it's off to Etosha National Park.

Dominated by a massive, shimmering white salt-pan and filled with game, Etosha is one of Africa's most mesmerising parks. Rail fans can rest on steady land with an overnight luxury stay in Etosha at Mokuti Game Lodge.

On your final morning, the Rovos train travels along old German built rails, through the Namib Desert and into Swakopmund - a carefully preserved 19th century German Hansa town set against the icy Atlantic coastline.
