“Your own private house in the middle of the African bush - it doesn't get much better than that. Perfect location to celebrate a special occasion or just life with family and friends.”Rikke Williams, Africa Safari Expert
The Homestead at Phinda was designed with its natural setting in mind, from the materials used – like thatch, timber and stone - to the gently-hued decor. There is exceptional attention to detail, like botanical print fabrics showing local flora and art that takes inspiration from bushman paintings. Floor-to-ceiling doors retract to open rooms to the veld, allowing you to immerse yourself thoroughly in nature.
The Homestead at Phinda is situated in the Phinda Private Game Reserve in kwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. Encompassing over 23 000 hectares and once an area of ancient tribal battlegrounds, the reserve is often described as the ‘Seven Worlds of Wonder’ due to its seven distinct habitats ranging from woodland and grassland to mountains and marshes.
Home to the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and white rhino) as well as endangered animals such as black rhino, wild dogs and cheetah, Phinda also boasts well over 400 bird species, making it a twitcher’s paradise. Unique and wonderfully diverse, this reserve provides an unforgettable African safari experience.
The Homestead at Phinda is ideal for families and groups of friends who are looking for an intimate, exclusive-use villa and a tailor-made safari experience in one of South Africa’s most distinctive private reserves. It is especially suitable for those who prefer to set their own pace, especially when it comes to game drives.
For game viewing, the best time to visit Phinda is during the May-to-September winter months when the vegetation is sparser and animals are concentrated close to water sources. You will enjoy clear, sunny weather and very little rain but do not discount the wet summer season: the rains turn the reserve into a beautiful green Eden, migrant birds arrive to feast on summer’s bounty and this is the best time to see animals with their young.
The Homestead at Phinda is set in the Phinda Private Game Reserve and falls within a malaria area: visitors are advised to consult their physician prior to travel for the most appropriate medication.
The villa’s modern gourmet kitchen is perfect for interactive sessions with your private chef – even non-cooks will pick up a useful tip or two. Menus are flexible: children and those with special dietary requirements are easily catered for, and you can either choose your own dishes or leave it up to the chef to delight you.
A high thatched ceiling and warm earthy accents make the master bedroom a luxurious abode. A king-sized bed faces large sliding doors with beautiful views over the wilderness, allowing you to game watch from the comfort of bed. Traditional Zulu finishes and quirky décor touches reflect the nature of the surrounding African environment.
Designed to deliver absolute comfort and luxury, the remaining three guest bedrooms feature king-sized beds and contemporary décor in natural, earthy tones. Thatch, wood and stone echo the surrounding landscape while sliding doors open to embrace the surrounding vistas.
The floor-to-ceiling glass doors of the en suite, stone-clad bathrooms retract, allowing you to game watch from the privacy of your large tub or outdoor shower.
The villa’s stylish living spaces are filled with contemporary décor, African artefacts and unique artworks. Custom-made sofas with plush cushions make perfect places to relax and take in the exquisite views while the wooden 10-seater dining table is ideal for sharing meals with family and friends. Sliding doors open onto wooden decks to connect effortlessly with the wilderness that surrounds the house, making you feel part of the Phinda landscape.
Wooden decks, secluded courtyards and comfortable outdoor furniture inspire out-of-doors living at The Homestead. Enjoy the tranquillity of a Zen-inspired pond as you work out in the villa’s private gym before sitting down to a lantern-lit dinner in the outdoor boma.
