Malawi » Introduction

Malawi, at the southern tip of the Great Rift Valley, is a land of diverse landscapes with rolling green hills, endless savannahs, river valleys and spectacular mountain ranges. The dominant feature, however, is Lake Malawi, which takes up a full fifth of the country.

The lake is lined with miles of unspoilt beaches, fringed with palm trees and baobabs, and filled with clear, warm water.

You can kayak to its scattered islands, snorkel around the submerged boulders with their colourful populations of cychlid fish or merely watch for exotic birdlife from your hammock on an isolated beach.

Safari through the romantic African landscapes, home to a variety of wildlife and an enormous diversity of birds, and enjoy a variety of comfortable and remote accommodation options.

Malawi is such an appealing, easy-going destination that it features on many of the Africa overland tours. But there are also specific tours or luxury options such as an eight-day fly-in safari that takes in the wilderness highlights of Malawi and Zambia.

The easy going Malawians who are quick to smile and wave, have such a reputation for friendliness, that their country is often referred to as the "warm heart of Africa.”
