Malawi is often referred to as "Africa for beginners" because it's such an appealing, easygoing destination. This relaxed, peaceful feel extends into Malawi accommodation, with intimate guesthouses tucked away on sandy beaches or rocky island shores.
For most visitors a Malawi beach holiday is a time to completely unwind. This is barefoot luxury at its best; wander straight out your room and onto a beach, laze in your hammock with a good book, do a spot of snorkelling in Lake Malawi or dine on freshly caught fish with the sand still between your toes.
If you'd like to combine your beach time with a bit of game viewing, we have a selection of Malawi accommodation in Liwonde National Park; wake up to the sound of birdsong, go on boat safaris past pods of grunting hippo, game drives in search of elephant and guided bush walks.
We've recommended a few of our favourite lodges, or you can ask one of our well-travelled Africa safari experts to help you find the Malawi accommodation that perfectly matches your holiday wishes.
Kaya Mawa Lodge - Set on a rocky outcrop between two beautiful beaches on Likoma Island, it's easy to see why this unique lodge was rated by Condé Nast Magazine as "one of the planet's 10 most romantic destinations".
Nkwichi Lodge - Located on the remote shores of Lake Niassa (Lake Malawi), this award-winning eco-lodge is the perfect place to relax, with comfortable chalets footsteps away from perfectly white sand and clear water teeming with brightly coloured fish.
Mumbo Island - Spend a few days on a peaceful private island: explore the paths and trails which wind their way to various beaches, take to the waters in a kayak or flop into your hammock and drift off to the cries of fish eagles.
Pumulani Lake Lodge - Positioned on a steep hillside, this luxurious lodge has massive rooms, each with sliding doors opening onto a private balcony. Once you've managed to tear yourself away from your suite, wander down to the beach, visit the local village or enjoy a relaxing cruise in the lodge dhow.
The people at Mumbo Island are great and welcoming. I could spend two weeks here simply chilling! Divine! - Africa safari expert, Kim du Toit
