The fact that Malawi is on the cusp of East and southern Africa, and the huge variety of habitats - from tropical forests and woodlands to wetlands and the Lake - have resulted in a great cross-section of birdlife. Around 650 species of birds have been recorded in this small country.
For many travellers, the haunting cry of the fish eagle is synonymous with their holiday at Lake Malawi. The Lake's rocky islands have more African fish eagles (Malawi's national bird) than anywhere else in the world, while the shorelines are home to a whole collection of species; from small, colourful kingfishers to the giant Marabou stork.
Mvuu Wilderness Lodge in Liwonde National Park, offers exceptional boat-based birding on the Shire River. Expect to see several species of herons, egrets, storks, kingfishers and plovers; with the chance to spot specials like the Pel's fishing owl and Boehm's bee-eater.
