Malawi is one of the world's least developed countries with around 85% of the population living in rural areas. Poverty is a major obstacle to Malawi's development, which makes it all the more important for lodges to do what they can to give back to local communities.

Malawi is also aptly described as the 'Warm Heart of Africa', and we'd highly recommend visiting nearby villages, chatting to local people and finding out firsthand about some of the inspiring work being done through community development projects - it's sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Nkwichi Lodge has set up a number of amazing projects including a huge agricultural project involving 8 villages. A visit to the nearby vegetable farm is well worthwhile, and some guests choose to stay on in this beautiful remote location to do volunteer work with the Manda Wilderness' Community Conservation Projects.

Visitors to Kaya Mawa Lodge on Likoma Island, are encouraged to walk or cycle around the village, and get to know a few of the local people. All the lodge staff come from the nearby village and Kaya Mawa has a great relationship with the islanders. You can also sponsor a child's education through their Island Child fund.
