Situated in southern East Africa, with a total area of 118 480km2, the landlocked republic of Malawi is one of Africa's smaller countries. The country is bordered by Tanzania, Zambia and largely by Mozambique.

Stretched along most of Malawi's eastern border and guttering through the thick groove of the Great Rift Valley is Africa's second deepest and third largest lake. Lake Malawi comprises roughly a fifth of the country's territory and is responsible for the largest amount of lake-residing fish species in the world.

As can be expected from such a tight geographical position, the landscape is one of narrow plateaus, thin rolling plains, steep depressions, and slithering lakes and wetlands.

Malawi has the notoriety of being one of the most densely populated areas in sub-Saharan Africa
