What better way to enjoy the calm waters and slow, relaxed pace of life on Lake Malawi than paddling about in a kayak? You'll discover that the water really is as clear as the travel guide photographs, so clear in fact that you can look down at the giant granite boulders and small shoals of fish.

Kayaking in these parts is a must to explore the outskirts of Mumbo Island. The people are great and welcoming and I could spend two weeks here simply chilling! Divine! - Africa Safari Expert Kim du Toit

Mumbo Island has sturdy sea-going kayaks. Take a leisurely paddle to one of the deserted coves of the island, or if you're feeling more energetic kayak the 10km stretch to Cape Maclear. The trip takes between 2 and 3 hours in a double kayak, and is a fantastic outing with the cries of Fish Eagles echoing across clear blue water.

Nkwichi Lodge, on the Mozambique shore of the Lake, has comfortable Canadian-style canoes. Unlike the other lakeside lodges in Malawi, Nkwichi also has squeaky-fine sand, so you can paddle off to your own stretch of beach for a peaceful picnic lunch or a spot of sunbathing.
