Known as the warm heart of Africa, part of the joy of travelling in Malawi is getting to know the local people.

Fortunately this is pretty easy as Malawi is a densely populated country scattered with towns and villages. Everywhere you go you're likely to be met with a wide smile, and an opportunity to chat over a game of bao (try it, it's quite addictive) and an icy Green (what locals call a Carlsberg beer).

What's more, English is one of two official languages and most people speak it, making communication easy.

Before you go, read through our Malawi travel guide for insight into this small country's colonial history and subsistence economy.
