Time passes slowly in Malawi; no one is in a rush. We'd rate that as one of the best things about this small African county, the fact that you're expected to slow right down!

Once you've rolled out of your hammock or taken a break from playing bao (a traditional game that's quite addictive), we'd recommend going kayaking on Lake Malawi's mirror-like surface or snorkelling amongst colourful cichlids - both fantastic activities that we consider top Malawi experience.

Known as the warm heart of Africa, you can happily wander around lakeside villages meeting local people. If, however, you'd prefer complete privacy at the water's edge, why not spend a few days on Mumbo Island.

Our guide of what to see and do in Malawi also takes you away from the lake and introduces other places of interest in Malawi, such as Liwonde National Park with rivers full of hippos and crocs and a phenomenal birdlife.
