Life in Malawi revolves around the lake. Lake Malawi National Park is a World Heritage Site where you can go snorkelling amongst colourful cichlids, and relax to the haunting cry of African fish eagles.

Although not a traditional safari destination, Malawi offers a unique wilderness experience with a true diversity of vegetation (from miombo woodlands to rolling grasslands).

We'd recommend a couple of days away from Lake Malawi, in one of the country's parks and reserves. Stay on the banks of the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, listening to the grunts of hundreds of hippos and watching the occasional elephant come down to drink.

Or, you could set out on horse back or mountain bike to explore the Nyika Plateau, an area known for zebra, antelope, and a rich birdlife.

Our Malawi wildlife guide will also give you insight into the country conservation efforts, which are particularly crucial in this poor and densely populated country.
