Malawi's Central Region contains the huge Central African Plateau, which is the western edge of the Great Rift Valley and of Lake Malawi. The altitude (around 1,200m) is hardly noticeable, as the plateau is almost uniformly flat.

The landscape's most notable geographical features are the valleys formed by the rivers that run from the west towards Lake Malawi. The region's capital is also the capital of the country, Lilongwe, which is positioned roughly centrally in the region.

The Central Region is bordered by the country's northern and southern regions, by Lake Malawi, and by Zambia and Mozambique.
