Mumbo Island is an intimate camp situated on a pristine and otherwise-deserted island in Lake Malawi.

The island lies within an exclusive concession area, which is part of the Lake Malawi National Park - the first freshwater marine reserve in the world, a World Heritage Site and the beautiful home of more than 500 species of fish, over 90% of which are endemic.

The dining area, bar and water sport gazebo are all constructed of timber, thatch and canvas, adhering to the principles of eco-architecture, and blend into the surrounding bush and large granite boulders. The tents are on raised platforms with separate eco toilets and bucket showers.

You can spend your days lying in hammocks or gently floating in the waters, but if you are feeling more energetic there is a variety of activities to enjoy including sea kayaking, snorkelling, scuba-diving and bird watching. Mumbo Island offers barefoot luxury and tranquillity and a good dose of healthy outdoor fun.

Mumbo Island is a private concession, which, in turn, is part of the Lake Malawi National Park; the lake forms the southern extremity of Africa's Great Rift Valley.

You can look forward to beginning your days at Mumbo Island with a hearty breakfast of fruit salad, freshly baked bread, eggs and Malawi-grown tea & coffee.

For lunches and dinners you'll be served an array of salads, fresh fish, casseroles, curries, stir-fries and pasta dishes. All the island's meals are prepared by an expert chef in a bush kitchen with an open fire.

Mumbo Island has 5 safari tents situated on thatched, wooden decks overlooking the lake. Each tent is fully furnished with its own shady viewing deck and private hammock, where you can laze away your afternoons looking out over the clear waters of the lake and listening for the cries of the fish eagle.

The eco-toilet and bucket shower are connected to the tents by a wooden walkway.
