Likoma is one of two Malawian islands located in Mozambican waters, the other being Chizumulu.
The island is highly populated and covered in plantations of cassava and rice. The coastline is rocky, with a few sandy bays, as well as marshy in certain areas, and you need to watch out for crocodiles when swimming or snorkelling. It is best to ask the locals where the safe places are to swim.
The market is an interesting and lively place, and a huge baobab, taken over and killed by a strangler fig, is now used by the traders as a cool storeroom.
The island is accessible by steamer, and also has a small airstrip. There is a dhow ferry running between Likoma Island and Chizumulu Island, which is a good place to spend a day snorkelling or diving.
Likoma is covered mostly by grassland and characterised by its large numbers of baobab trees.
