Liwonde National Park » Liwonde national park

With the Shire River as its border, Liwonde National Park could well be Malawi's best. Well managed, stocked with large numbers of interesting animals and with beautiful scenery, this park should not be missed. Thousands of hippos and crocodiles laze on the banks of the river, and hundreds of elephants, antelope and zebras come down to the banks to drink.

Mvuu Camp and Wilderness Lodge are the only places of accommodation in this National Park. Mvuu means 'hippo' and it is best to take heed of the signs 'Beware of the Hippo's' as they often amble up to the lawns at night to feed. The mixture of riverine, mopane and grassland habitats provides a variety of birdlife, and recently two black rhinos were reintroduced to the area.

Excellent guides take you on boat trips and guided walks, as well as night drives. The guides will point out smaller animals such as the dwarf chameleons, and are always telling stories and relaying local legends about the animals. The camp is not easily accessible during the rainy season due to poor roads, but the main lodge and camp is reached by boat. When you get to the jetty on the one side of the river, raise the red flag and soon enough someone from the camp on the opposite side will notice and come and fetch you!
