The Majete Wildlife Reserve is a scenically beautiful nature reserve in the Lower Shire Valley of southern Malawi. Majete is conveniently located 70 km southwest of Malawi's commercial capital, Blantyre.
The landscape of Majete Wildlife Reserve is hilly and covered for the most part by the tall trees of the Shire river valley's deciduous woodland. The Shire river forms the park's eastern boundary, and the vegetation near the river is acacia, leadwood and marula savannah, punctuated by the occasional baobab tree and stands of ilala palms. On the far western side of Majete the rugged terrain is covered by miombo woodland.
A large variety of animals has been introduced to Majete Wildlife Reserve, including black rhino, buffalo, Burchell's zebra, bushbuck, hartebeest, impala, Livingstone's eland, Lichtenstein's sable antelope, nyala, warthog and waterbuck. Elephant, hartebeest, zebra, cheetah and lion are also due for introduction. The Shire river is home to very many crocodiles and hippos.
Majete Wildlife Reserve's birdlife is not be sniffed at. Its varied habitats are home to 311 species of birds.
Majete's commitment to preserving the natural environment means extends to an absence of tarred roads in the reserve. All roads are dirt and the number of bridges in the reserve is kept to a minimum. You'll need a 4x4 to navigate around Majete Wildlife Reserve.
Chalets and campsites are available. The camp is beautifully positioned, overlooking Matitu Falls on the Shire.
