Mangochi sits between Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe, and straddles the Shire River. The road from Monkey Bay to Mangochi runs along the southern shores of the lake, and passes many lodges and hotels.

Once an important slave market, Mangochi now is just a good stocking up centre and there are a number of supermarkets, banks and fresh food markets.
