Monkey Bay

Although Monkey Bay is Malawi's main port, and stop over for travellers coming down to Cape Maclear, there is not actually much to do here. There is a market, supermarket, a good bakery, and plenty of roadside stalls selling beautiful curios. It's best to try to arrive here early enough to get a lift on to Cape Maclear, but there are a few places to stay if one gets stuck.
