Although this is the largest reserve in Malawi, it has virtually been abandoned by the Department of National Parks & Wildlife. This means that poaching has been rampant and big game is limited. Roads are also almost inaccessible, yet good walks can be undertaken, with the help of a guide or ranger.
Luckily, changes are afoot as plans are being made to upgrade facilities and improve the management of the reserve. Camping at Nkhotakota requires that visitors bring everything they need including tents, bedding, food and drink. The only camp worth staying at is Chipati, while we suggest you skip the Bua and Wodzi camps which are even less equipped than Chipati.
We recommend staying at one of the lodges on the shores of Lake Malawi and take a day trip into the reserve.
