Ile aux Aigrettes is a tiny coral island just off the coast of the laid back town of Mahebourg. The island, reached only by boat, has been declared a nature conservation site run by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.

Nature enthusiasts will love the guided tour that shows off all the hard work that's involved in returning this small part of Mauritius to its original state, before man and new species were introduced.

Visit the indigenous plant nursery; look out for the rare pink pigeon, the Mauritius Kestrel, endangered skinks and of course, the giant tortoises.

For more information about the island and its conservation project have a look at their website: http://www.ile-aux-aigrettes.com/
