The dodo, unfortunately, is not the only bird to have become extinct in Mauritius. Other victims have included parrots, pigeons and owls.

Three species that have been saved from extinction thanks to the work of conservationists are the Mauritius kestrel (a small falcon), the pink pigeon and the emerald-green echo parakeet.

On your Mauritius holiday, you'll commonly see bright yellow weaver birds, fly-catchers, bulbuls and white-eyes.
