The rugged and largely inaccessible mountains of Mauritius provided hideaways for runaway Mauritian slaves, who lived here secure in the knowledge that their masters didn't stand a chance of finding them.

The Mauritian mountains are accessible today via the Black River Gorges National park, which was opened in 1997 to preserve what remains of the island's indigenous tropical forests.

The park's 65km2 are gorgeously forested for anyone who wants a break from the beaches for a scenic walk or drive. There are various hiking and walking trails through the valleys and along the Black River. The plant and birdlife are fascinating here.
