There are a number of dangerous creatures to look out for when swimming and diving. Firstly be careful not to stand on the spikey sea urchins as the delicate spikes can be very difficult to extract from your foot.

Most importantly, ensure you do not stand on the dorsal spines of the stone fish (known locally as the laff). The poison from the spines causes great pain and swelling and has even been known to cause death.

Wear old or plastic shoes when in the water to protect your feet against sea urchins, stone fish and sharp coral.

Stay away from the slow-moving, red and white striped lion-fish as its fins are poisonous.

Do not go swimming in areas where it is prohibited, and avoid muddy water.

Avoid swimming in fresh water as there is a risk of bilharzia.
